Web-based programming JavaScript as well as HTML can be found among the top tech-related skills employers are looking for, according to research from Upwork.


The market for freelancers is witnessing an increase in demand as employers look for freelancers to fill the gaps in their workforce, according to Upwork, a platform for freelancers. Upwork.

The latest Freelance Forward Economist report found that the proportion of US workers classified as permanent freelancers increased from 33.8 percent in 2020 to 35% by 2021.

More freelancers are choosing tasks in skilled professions such as computer programming IT, marketing, and business consulting. The number of freelancers is rising from 50 percent in 2020 to 53% by 2021.

The most sought-after skills with the highest annual growth on the platform of Upwork included web programming (43 percent) web design (31 per cent) and social marketing via social media (25 percentage).

The change in the kind of work that freelancers do is as businesses struggle to hire full-time employees within a highly competitive recruitment market, as stated by Upwork.

Digital transformation has brought new technological demands to companies that want to remain in the game, while full-time employees leave their jobs at a rapid rate making finding and keeping qualified employees more challenging.

Companies that hire for roles in IT and technology are feeling the squeeze and this has pushed up the demand for freelancers who have knowledge of programming and the web.

Upwork stated that freelancers with the ability to be skilled in these areas can have in an "essential role ....in filling talent gaps and solving businesses' most pressing needs in 2022."

Margaret Lilani, VP of the talent management division at Upwork She stated: "Our data indicates that not only is there a huge demand for a broad range of professional skills, but also businesses big and small are shifting their approach to accessing the talent and looking to freelancers to fill critical skills gaps."

The Skills data came through data from the Upwork database and were based on gross service volumes from the 1st of January 2021 until the 31st of October in 2021.

Each skill was required to have at least 500 projects completed throughout the period. Growth year-over-year was determined by comparing gross services volume in 2021 with the gross service volume for the same time frame in 2020.

The data obtained from KPMG along with REC from January 20, 2022, earlier indicated changes in the hiring habits for UK employers.

In particular, it revealed that even though IT and computing positions continue to drive growth in both temporary and permanent job openings, demand is slowing. KPMG and REC stated that the results indicated that companies are going through the hiring boom and are shifting their focus towards re-skilling and upgrading existing employees to fill shortages.
